Simple Days

Simple Days Entertainment is the name I chose for my company many years ago. Many people have asked me about my company’s name. I struggled finding a name but eventually settled on the title of a song I wrote about my grandfather. It is a name that reminds me to pause and consider the more important things in life.

My grandfather was a simple but talented man. He was intelligent and creative. He was a musician. He was part of a band in his youth. He was a gifted craftsman and could build anything, including a ferris wheel in our backyard. He served in the Army during World War II and told us many stories of his time in the service. He worked every day in a textile mill in North Carolina. He was not a wealthy man but provided for his family. He worked on the machines in the mill. He had suffered damage to his hearing from all of the years around the loud equipment. Although...

Urine in the bucket

Attack someone…get applauded.

Have a meltdown…get headlines.

Spew hate…get a TV show.

Insult leaders and civil servants…you are just acting your age.

Promote and take illegal drugs…you’re relevant (even as people die daily from drug abuse).

In trouble with the law…it must be a police conspiracy against you.

Blame everyone (but yourself) for your failed relationships…well, you know.

In contrast…

Try to inspire…you are preachy.

Do good for those who are suffering…You have an agenda.

Live a mindful life of moderation…You are boring.

It sends all the wrong messages to artists (and the world) to continue to celebrate the worst decisions and actions. It communicates that the best way to stay relevant is to screw up. Actual winning at life looks like losing. Lives falling apart is too often portrayed as winning. Hurting someone becomes a tool for success. Hate can be a PR play...

Alena Rose Jonas

Psalm 30:5
Weeping may endure for a night,
But joy comes in the morning

I have always loved this verse of Scripture. Today it speaks to me on a new level. Yesterday we were at the funeral of my father-in-law. Today, we are welcoming our new granddaughter, Alena Rose Jonas.

Our hearts are filled with joy thinking about the fact that they passed each other in the heavens. Jerry Miller left on his way to his heavenly home. I can picture him arriving and causing everyone to laugh with joy. He is healed and happy.

Then heaven kissed a little angel and sent her to us. Part of me would like to think that her great grandfather kissed her as she was leaving to join her Mom and Dad back home on earth.

Alena Rose, welcome to our world. Papa Jerry loved you even before you arrived. We all love you and want to show you the kind of love we learned from him.

Drying the sad tears and now...

It Just Wore Off

Frankie is my youngest son and he is COOL!

We love many of the same things. We love Science Fiction (Star Wars, Stargate, etc.), Comic Books, Big Bang Theory, and all things geek and nerdy stuff. We have a comic book collection that we treasure. Every year we go together to Comic Con in San Diego. He will take a couple friends. I love watching him go from table to table getting artists to draw something in his sketch book. He loves attending panels from anime to the Walking Dead. He knows everyone. He can pick out the writers, he knows the artists and all their work, and he even picks out YouTube stars as the walk through the convention hall. He is regularly recognized by animation fans because he has done voice over work on famous animated movies, like PONYO. He loves it and I love seeing him have so much fun.

There was always something special about the way Frankie views...

Idiot Day!

Have you ever wanted to just repond to the ridiculous people that communicate online with hate, ignorance, and stupidity?

There are so many times that I find myself writing responses that I will never send. I call these therapy letters. I work out my feelings and then politely file them away. They are never sent. They are used to work out my frustration and put my thoughts out on paper. Usually I am really thankful later that I did not hit send on the email, tweet, Facebook post, etc. For many years, I kept a literal file that was filled with my emotional therapy letters. I am convinced that it saved me so much money in actual therapy.

Recently, I heard that Twitter was the most hateful site on the internet. I can believe it based on some of the mean comments I have received, as well as artists that I manage. For some reason people feel free to unleash hate and venom freely...

Death can be beautiful

I have decided to start writing down my thoughts concerning life. Unfortunately, my first post concerns yesterday’s passing of my father-in-law, Jerry Miller.

I met Jerry almost 30 years ago. My wife, Denise, and I were new students at a school in Dallas, Texas. One year later, I married Denise in Casa Grande, Arizona.
Jerry was a perfect example of a man with a happy heart. He loved to laugh and make other people laugh. He loved to sing the oldies. He knew the words to every song released in the 50s and 60s. He loved classic cars. Most of all…HE LOVED FOOD!
On his first trip to see us when we lived in New Jersey, he talked about food from Little Italy, food from China Town, Hot dogs and chestnuts from the streets of NY, and cannoli (an Italian pastry). Every gathering centered around his love of food. It was a valuable part of every family event. He saw it as an important...
